Planting Season is Here!

Our grade 2 gardeners are busy with their Plant Unit, planting seedlings in our new raised bed gardens. All 2nd graders started the seeds in the school greenhouse, and we have carrots seeded in the cement planter near the front door of the school and radishes were seeded in both garden beds. Thanks to Marlene Stasinos and members of the Bradford Grange, we now have four raised beds, so each grade 2 classroom will have their own garden. Lots of help went into this project based learning activity, with special thanks to Marlene, Nikki Mulloy, and Devan Ferreira for coordinating this project and helping with everything from building the beds to weeding! A big thank you also goes out to Neal, Ollie, Lucas, and Genevieve Ferreira and Brady Mulloy who have been digging, planting, and watering; Becca Marley for helping plant the seedlings with our grade 2 classes; Chris Stasinos from Chris’s farm stand for helping build the raised beds and along with Knapp’s Greenhouse donated the transplants; Kimball Farms for providing the compost; and especially Marlene and all the wonderful members of the Bradford Grange who chose Silver Hill to h lp educate the children on growing healthy food, helped build the beds, and provided manual labor and the soil and seedlings to bring our Plant unit to life!

Silver Hill has many talented authors and illustrators!

We congratulate the following students who attended the April 28th Appleseed Celebration in Lawrence and had their work published in the Appleseed Literary Magazine.

Each student did an amazing job reading their story or describing their artwork in front of a whole auditorium.

They ROAR!

Melissa and her helpers got a great start on the Earth Day clean up campaign at the park. Winnekenni is such a beautiful resource for Haverhill families!

We wish everyone a new year filled with love, laughter, and of course, learning! There are so many new and exciting things happening in our classrooms…our Lucy Calkins Units of Study in Writing, EngageNY Math, our PBIS social-emotional program, and the upcoming “Next Generation” Science and Technology standards, just to name a few. Mrs. Sue Bouchard, kindergarten teacher, submitted a request for funding to DonorsChoose.org titled, “Inspire Little Scientists with STEM”.  Mrs. Bouchard’s classroom received all the funding required to receive innovative science kits.  Congratulations to Mrs. Bouchard! She and her class are impressive as we see how even our youngest learners dive right into a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) activity!

Our Mission

Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School is a thriving learning environment that nurtures, inspires, challenges and educates the minds and well-being of our diverse population of children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 where all children will achieve their optimal academic level and develop positive citizenship and character traits.

We support the growth of the Whole Child and the continuous professional development of the teachers in collaboration with the families of Silver Hill and the Haverhill Community. The vision of Silver Hill as a Horace Mann Charter is to provide our community with leadership in instructional practices, site based management by staff and parents, and increased community involvement in schools.

Our students wrote their version: The Mission of SHHMCS is to be NICE – Nurture, Inspire, Challenge, and Educate all students (Us!). Our thriving learning environment (classroom & school) helps us build and develop higher academic skills, positive citizenship and character traits.
